You track every macro, every set, every recovery variable. The one system you have never programmed is the fluid that actually digests the food.


The duffel bag is a laboratory. Metallic blister packs with capsules popped out, white plastic pill bottles, a compact silver digital scale, loose foil packets of single-use pre-workout, and a crumpled sheet of paper covered in hand-scribbled numbers: morning weights, training sets, supplement times down to the minute. Everything is weighed, logged and optimised.

And then the recovery meal arrives. A perfectly portioned grass-fed ribeye, organic rice, the numbers all checked. Within thirty minutes the upper stomach swells so tight that the lifting belt becomes a constraint rather than a tool. Leg days get skipped because the gut is too bloated to brace under a squat. Morning runs with the kids stop because the impact feels like an oncoming digestive disaster. And at three in the morning, the same cold frustration: lying awake while the people closest to you quietly stop expecting things.

The cupboard of shame

When the brick-in-the-stomach feeling first appeared after training, the natural response was to look for a mechanism. Instead, the search produced a loop of temporary patches.

Round one was the GP. Ultrasound clear, stool tests showed no inflammation, coeliac panel negative. The diagnosis was a sensitive stomach, the prescription was an IBS leaflet and a food diary. Cost: four months and no answers.

None of it worked, because none of it was aimed at the right biology. Probiotics and enzymes act on the lower intestine. The bottleneck is not in the colon. It sits upstream, in the gallbladder and the biliary tract, where the body's most concentrated digestive fluid can slow to a crawl.

To recover from high-volume training you eat dense, calorie-heavy meals: beef, whole eggs, avocado, clean oils. Every gram of dietary fat in those meals must be emulsified by bile before pancreatic lipase can finish breaking it down. That is not a preference of the digestive system; it is a physical constraint. Fat is hydrophobic. Lipase is water-soluble. Without bile acting as a surfactant to break large fat globules into microscopic droplets, the enzyme has almost no surface area to work on.

The sequence runs in a strict order. First, bile is released from the gallbladder. Second, fat is emulsified into droplets. Third, pancreatic lipase breaks the droplets down. Fourth, micelles form and carry the products across the gut wall. Step one gates every step that follows it.

When training volume is high and meals are heavy, the gallbladder works double-time to produce a sudden, concentrated stream of active bile. Where that pathway is sluggish, the fluid pools, thickens and does not arrive in the volume the meal demands. Two things happen as a result.
