The upstream experiment: how a gym supplement addressed the bloat my doctors labelled IBS

Three years of clear scans, an IBS label, and a cupboard full of half-finished bottles — until a lifting buddy asked the one question nobody in a white coat had thought to raise.


I played centre back at university. If I had a sprained ankle, I taped it up and got back on the pitch. When I started my company, I worked fourteen-hour days on cold coffee and whatever the canteen had left. I was the person who got through things.

Three years ago, the engine cracked.

The brick

He told me that the fitness community had been using a specific, naturally occurring bile acid for years to support their livers and keep digestion running under massive, high-calorie meal plans. The compound is called TUDCA — tauroursodeoxycholic acid.

I went home and spent hours reading. What I found shifted my entire understanding of how the body processes food.

The sluggish bile bottleneck

Most gut advice treats bloating as a lower-gut problem caused by the wrong bacteria. The standard recommendation is to throw probiotics or fermentable fibres at it. Fats are not emulsified upstream, so they travel downstream raw. Lower-gut bacteria ferment what arrives, and massive pockets of gas stretch the gut wall. That is the brick, the bloat, and the three-in-the-morning ache.

My gallbladder was not diseased — there were no stones on the ultrasound — but it was plausible that my bile flow had become structurally sluggish. That would explain why every remedy I had tried had failed: probiotics and enzymes act on the lower intestine, but my bottleneck was upstream, in the biliary tract, before any of those products could reach it.

What TUDCA actually is

TUDCA is not a plant extract, a laxative, or a synthetic drug. It is a naturally occurring bile acid that the liver already produces in small amounts. When taken as a supplement, it supports bile flow by helping to maintain the fluidity of the bile pool. It is a bile acid used to support a bile problem — which is a more direct line of reasoning than anything else I had tried.

None of which means it is guaranteed to help anyone. The published research on TUDCA exists, but most of it comes from populations with diagnosed liver conditions, not from people with unexplained post-meal bloating and clear scans. All I can say is what I wish someone had said to me at year two: if every downstream remedy has failed, it may be worth asking whether the problem is upstream. Bile flow is a mechanical question, not a bacterial one, and TUDCA is a bile acid that supports that flow.
